April is National Eye Health Month

April is the perfect time to focus on protecting one of your most valuable senses—your vision. National Eye Health Month is a reminder that many eye conditions can be prevented or managed with early detection and proper care.

How often should you get an eye exam?

  • Routine eye exams are essential, even if your vision seems fine.
  • Adults (18–60 years): Every 1–2 years Adults over 60: Annually
  • Children: Before starting school and regularly as recommended
  • High-risk individuals (diabetes, high blood pressure, family history): At least once a year
  • Regular exams can detect issues like glaucoma, macular degeneration, and vision changes before symptoms appear.

Chronic conditions & eye health

  • Conditions like diabetes and high blood pressure can damage the small blood vessels in your eyes and lead to vision loss.
  • Protect your eyes by:
  • Keeping blood sugar and blood pressure controlled
  • Getting annual dilated eye exams Reporting any vision changes promptly

Tips for healthy vision

  • Wear UV-protective sunglasses
  • Follow the 20-20-20 rule for screen use
  • Eat a balanced diet (leafy greens, omega-3s)
  • Stay active and avoid smoking
